  • Relationship: 2nd cousin 13 times removed of Roger William Bredin.
  • Note*: The Most Noble William Seymour, 2nd Duke of Somerset Order of the GarterKG (1588–October 24, 1660) was the son of Edward Seymour, 3rd Earl of Hertford, and Honora Rogers, and the great-grandson of the first Duke of Somerset.
He married, firstly, Arbella Stuart, daughter of Charles Stuart, 5th Earl of Lennox and Elizabeth Cavendish, on 22 June 1610, in a secret marriage.
He married, secondly, Lady Frances Devereux, daughter of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex and Frances Walsingham, on 3 March 1616 at Drayton Bassett and had seven children:
    William Seymour (1621–16 June 1642)
    Robert Seymour (1622–1646)
Henry Seymour, Lord Beauchamp (1626–30 March 1654), married Mary Capell and had issue.
Lady Mary Seymour (1637–10 April 1673), married Heneage Finch, 3rd Earl of Winchilsea and had issue.
Jane Seymour (1637–23 November 1679), married Charles Boyle, Viscount Dungarvan and had issue.
    Frances Seymour (1642–?)
John Seymour, 4th Duke of Somerset (1646–29 April 1675)
King Charles I created William Seymour Marquess of Hertford in 1641, which was the first creation of that title. During the First English Civil War Seymour commanded Royalist forces from South Wales.
He died on 24 October 1660 at Essex House, London and was buried on 1 November 1660 at Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire. He was succeeded by his grandson William Seymour.

Duchess of Somerset Arbella Stuart

F, b. 1575, d. 1615
  • Note*: Arbella Stuart (or "Arabella" and/or "Stewart") (1575 - 1615), Duchess of Somerset, was the only child of Elizabeth Cavendish (daughter of Bess of Hardwick) and Charles Stuart (younger brother of Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, who was the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots.
According to Isaac D'Israeli's Curiosities of Literature, the Pope had matrimonial plans for Arbella: He wanted her to marry a member of the House of Savoy (descended from one of Edward IV of England's many bastards) and then take the English throne, leaving James king of only Scotland (which would make the king of France happy). The Duke of Parma was already married, so the Pope ("in his infallibility," says D'Israeli) settled on his own brother, who was a Catholic Cardinal. To eliminate that impediment, the Pope defrocked his brother, freeing him to marry "Arbelle" (as the Italians spelled her name) and thus become king of England. Of course no more came of this notion, either, and it may be superfluous to mention that nobody, then or now, has ever been sure Arbella was a Catholic — she was flexible enough that everyone who talked with her thought her to be of the same religion as they were.
Neither would King James allow her to marry, once he was king of England and had children of his own, because her children would have had a claim to the throne. In 1603, right after James came to the English throne, there was a plot (in which Sir Walter Raleigh was involved) to overthrow him and put Arbella on the throne, but when she was invited to participate by writing to the king of Spain agreeing to it, she reported it to James instead, and that was the end of that. In 1604 the king of Poland sent an ambassador to England to ask for Arbella to be his queen, but D'Israeli could not discover whether it was James or Arbella herself who rejected that offer.
There are some indications that she tried to elope in about 1604 and fell out of favor with King James because of it; she was certainly out of sight until 1608, when she was restored to his good graces. In 1610 she did elope and marry William Seymour, 2nd Duke of Somerset, grandson of Lady Catherine Grey, a younger sister of Lady Jane Grey. For that, King James imprisoned them: Arbella in Sir Thomas Perry's house in Lambeth and Seymour in the Tower of London; they had some liberty within those buildings, and some of her letters to him and to the king during this period survive. When the king found out about her letters to Seymour, however, he transferred Arbella to the custody of the bishop of Durham, but Arbella claimed to be sick, so her departure for Durham was delayed.
The couple used that time to plan their escape. She dressed as a man and got away to Lee (in Kent), but Seymour did not meet her there before their getaway ship had to sail for France. Seymour did escape from the Tower, but by the time he got to Lee, she was gone, so he caught the next ship he could and sailed to Flanders. The ship Arbella was on was overtaken by King James's men just before it reached Calais (France), and she was taken back and imprisoned in the Tower of London. She never saw her husband again, and she died in the Tower in 1615.
In 1993 a collection of more than a hundred of Arbella's letters was published, edited by Sara Jayne Steen, providing details of her activities and ideas.

    Susan and William
Susan Benedict married a widower, William A Wager, who was the father of three young children. William's first wife was Margaret Huff.
Given the age of William's three children at the time of his marriage to Susan, it can be presumed that Susan became their mother in all senses of the word.
Susan and husband William & family appear on the 1861 and 1871 census in Sophiasburgh, Prince Edward County. Given there are no more children appearing on the censuses, other than William's three, it can determined that Susan and William never had children of their own, or none that lived.
Susan Benedict-Wager died relatively young, at age 46. After her death,William Wager went on to marry a third time, to Eliza Wilson-Parks a widow., Principal=William A Wager

    The Parents of Mary Benedict
    Mary's Early Years
From the small excerpts of two letters, one written by Elias Benedict, and one by Charles Benedict, mention is made of their sister Mary. Up until finding this paper, in Jennie Pringle's research notes, no other mention of Ard and Hannah ever having a daughter Mary, had come to light.
It would of course make sense that Ard and Hannah would name a daughter "Mary" given Ard's mother was Mary and the couple did named a daughter Phoebe, presumably after Hannah's mother.
Maybe the lack of information passed on about Mary Benedict was because Mary, like her older brother William, simply left the area after a marriage, never to return. And so, nieces and nephews never knew of her or knew very little to pass on to the next generation.
    Mary and James
Through some digging, it was found that a Mary Benedict married a James Jarmin, in Napanee in 1847. In tracking this couple there are some rather striking coincidences but still, no definitive proof to indicate that this Mary Benedict, who married James Jarmin, is the daughter of Ard and Hannah.
Mary Benedict-Jarmin died in Oregon in 1905. Her death certificate says she was born in New York, yet on every census (1861 Canadian, 1870 USA, 1880 USA, 1900 USA)Mary Benedict-Jarmin indicates she was born in Canada. Further she says her Dad was born in Vermont! Unfortunately Mary Benedict-Jarmin's death certificate does not mention her parent's names.

  • Relationship: 4th great-grandaunt of Roger William Bredin.
  • Note*: William McCallum was the son of Duncan McCallum and Margaret Legget, his younger brother Duncan McCallum married Amanda's younger sister Almira Benedict.
It would appear that Amanda and William moved about quite a bit and passed on that 'wanderlust' trait to their ten children.
So far, William and Amanda have not been found on the 1861 Canadian census. However it is believed they may have been in Mount Forest, Wellington County in the early 1860's.
They obviously moved back to Hastings County by the 1871 census and appear in Thurlow Township, Hastings County. In 1881 they are in Madoc Township, Hastings County.
Now, because a number of their children moved to the South Western United States and the year these children give for their 'immigration' is 1889, then it is possible that at some point Amanda and William and their entire family left Canada. Given they could not be found on the 1891 Census it is probable.
William and Amanda however returned to Canada but it would seem at least half their children did not. William and Amanda can be found on the 1901 Canadian Census in Tweed, Hungerford Township, Hastings County, Ontario., Principal=William McCallum

  • Relationship: 4th great-grandaunt of Roger William Bredin.
  • Note*: Almira Jane Benedict appears on the 1851 Census in the home of James and Mary Fox, Tyendenaga Township, Hastings County. She is 16 years old, single and likely a servant of some sort in their home.
    Almira and Duncan
Duncan was the son of Duncan McCallum and Margaret Legget, his older brother William McCallum married Almira's older sister Amanda Benedict.
Almira and Duncan and their growing family appear on the 1861 and 1871 Census in Elzevir Township, Hastings County. However by 1881 they had up and moved to Fort William (now Thunder Bay) Algoma District, Ontario.
On the 1861 Census, Almira's mother Hannah Benedict is living with them.
Around 1911, Almira and Duncan moved from Fort William to Vancouver, British Columbia.

Both Almira Jane and husband Duncan are buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver, British Columbia.

  • Relationship: 4th great-granduncle of Roger William Bredin.
  • Note*: Given Almon Benedict was born in 1848, and by then Hannah Pringle-Benedict, his supposed mother, was 50 years old, it is a distinct possibility that Almon might have been born out of wedlock to one of Hannah and Ard's older daughters (Susan perhaps) and raised by Ard and Hannah as their own child?
    Almon’s Early Years
Almon Benedict has so far not been found, with any of his family members, on the 1861 Census? Where he was, as a 12 or 13 year old boy, remains a mystery. He shows up, as a 21 year old young man, on the 1871 Census, in the home of his brother Charles Benedict and Charles' wife Martha who were living in Thurlow Township, Hastings County.
Almon marries in 1876 and Ard and Hannah are listed as his parents.
    Almon and Emma
Almon Benedict married Emma Dunn in 1876 and it appears they left Canada not too long after their marriage.
In 1880, according to the USA Federal Census, Almon, Emma and their young son Harry were living in Kansas, the point of origin of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad (A.T.& S.F. Railroad).
By the 1900 USA Federal census, Almon Benedict and his expanded family were living in Las Vegas, San Miguel County, New Mexico, only a couple of blocks from Division Headquarters of the Railroad. Apparently, Las Vegas, New Mexico became a boomtown, from the time the Railroad arrived in 1879 until its Division Headquarters was relocated in the 1920s.
    The Final Years for Almon
Almon was a Carpenter with the Railroad for over 20 years. Due to an illness Almon left the Railroad in 1900 and he and his family moved to California, however, according to Almon's Obituary, he was brought back to Las Vegas, in 1905 to die at home. Almon Benedict is buried in the Masonic Cemetery, Las Vegas, San Miguel County, New Mexico.
    Footnotes
    From Almon's Obit
"Mr. Benedict was born near Belville, Ont. October 18, 1848. He was married in 1876 to the esteemed lady who survives him. The family moved to the United States in 1879 and to Las Vegas in June 1883. Mr Benedict was made a Free Mason in Liberty Kansas transferring his membership to Las Vegas. He was a member of the Royal Arch chapter of the Kinghts Templar of the Eastern Star and of th A.O.U.W. He held responsible offices in all the orders to which he belonged and ever fulfilled his duties with the ability and fidelity which characterized his whole life. He was insured in the Mutual Reserve Life Insurance company and the A.O. U.W. Deceased was a model in his private as he was in his public life. He was generous and frank in disposition devotedly attached to his home and family, of winning personality and of the most exemplary character"
Emma Dunn-Benedict, Almon's wife, lived on for many more years in California. She died the 22 March 1937 in Los Angeles, California and she is buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, California.
