- Father: Joshua Benedict b. 1751, d. 9 Dec 1839
- Mother: Mary Wilcox
- Relationship: 5th great-granduncle of Roger William Bredin.
- Biography*: The father of Smedley was Joshua Benedict, a soldier (unknown rank) in the army fighting for the patriot cause in Connecticut. He died on the ninth of December, 1839 at Sheffield Twp., Lennox & Addington County in Ontario, then known as Upper Canada.
Smedley’s Early Years
The limited evidence suggests that Smedley William Benedict was born in Grand Isle, Vermont. This evidence being the very early Vermont Censuses, and a marriage for one of Smedley's sisters, Anna, both of which indicate Joshua Benedict, Smedley's father, and family were in Chittenden County, Vermont from 1792 to approximately 1805. McIntyre mentioned that Smedley William Benedict was born 1799 in the United States, then came to Canada. It appears Smedley was the youngest child of Joshua and Mary Benedict
The Benedicts settled in Lennox & Addington County of Ontario, then known as Upper Canada, in the early 1800’s. It is noted that a James Benedict was assessed in Fredericksburg Twp of Lennox & Addington County in 1808 for: 470 uncleared acres, 30 cleared acres, three horses and seven cattle. The relationship to Smedley is unknown at this time. In the same assessment we find Daniel Dafoe, Smedley’s future father-in-law.
According to White, Smedley was a resident of Victoria District in 1845, at the age of 45. So his birth date would have been between 1799 and 1801. Hastings is the adjoining county to the west of Lennox & Addington County.
In about 1828, Smedley Benedict was enrolled in the Second Regiment of the Lennox Militia under the command of a Captain Archibald McDonnell. At that time he was mentioned as 24 years old, which would place his birth date at about 1804. This is according to the Militia General order dated 7 Nov. 1828.
Catherine Dafoe
[this section to be relocated to the Dafoe web shortly]
The Dafoe family were United Empire Loyalists who were raised in the southwestern corner of Vermont in the community of Pownal, close to (now) New York and Massachusetts states. Catherine’s grandfather chose the British side and the family suffered loss of property and exodus to the British colony to the north.
The origins of the Dafoe family goes back to the early 18th century, when vinedresser Daniel Thevou, his wife Marianne and two children Maria Anna and Abraham, emigrated from Switzerland, as part of the large Palatine Migration. The family left Rotterdam in 1709 sailing to the New World via London. Marianne did not survive the voyage so Daniel arrived at the Hudson River with two children to care for in a foreign land(5).
His son Abraham (1702-1753) married Anna Maria Catharina Reiffenberger and lived in nearby Rhinbeck in New York, raising at least five sons and three daughters.
Catherine’s grandfather, John Ernst Dafoe was born Johan Ernst Defuh, but anglicized his name in the 1760’s when Englishmen settled around him in the Hoosick Patent of New York Province. John married twenty-year-old Mary Keller on February 1, 1749. Both were German speaking as well as English. Together they raised seven sons and one daughter in Pownal in Vermont. John was elected deer reeve and pathmaster and built a grist mill near the town centre. He was among the many Loyalists who were rounded up and jailed in Connecticut in 1776, escaping in 1777, probably in the general breakout that occurred when the prisoners heard they were to be shot the next morning.
John entered into the war on the British side, fighting in the Battle at Bennington of August 16 1777, just north of Pownal, with sons George, Conrad and Abraham. George was shot in battle and died a few days later. Abraham, Catherine’s granduncle, was captured and paroled, but the father, John was captured and held. He escaped again and fled to Canada. It seems John continued in the war as a courier-spy on secret service. His wife Mary kept one of the “safe houses” along the couriers’ route, between Crown Point and New York City. They did lose their property at Pownal after the war, losing “30 acres in Pownal; a good house valued at 100 pounds Halifax currency; an orchard and a grist mill valued at 300 pounds. He also lost his horses, cows, hogs and wagons.” John passed away in the refugee camp at St. Jean’s Quebec in 1784, likely of malaria and undoubtedly aggravated by the rough life of a spy.
Daniel Dafoe U.E., the youngest child of John Ernst Dafoe and Maria Martigen "Mary" Keller and the father for our Catherine, was born on Sept. 15, 1769 in New York Province in the States; too young to fight in the Revolutionary War and he died prior to 1844. Daniel married Elizabeth Wright, daughter of Samuel Wright, U.E., in 1790 in Quebec and together they raised twelve children in the Lennox & Addington County of Ontario.
Elizabeth Wright was born in 1769 in the States and passed away on Dec 21, 1844 at Fredericksburg. Her family came north to Canada West after the Peace of 1794.
18 April 1792, Elizabeth prays for 200 acres in Mecklenbough District, dau. of Samuel Wright U. E., who was a widower. This was granted on August 30, 1797. D76, Bundle 3, Microfilm C1743.
Catherine was born in Fredericksburg Twp. of Upper Canada in 1804. She received her Orders-in-Council land grant of 50 acres on March 10, 1834.
Smedley and Catherine
By about this time he would have married Catherine Dafoe. Catherine’s family is well recorded in the United Empire Loyalist’s records of Ontario. Her line goes back at least four generations to a Daniel Theyou from Switzerland, settling in Kingston, New York. Catherine’s parents were Daniel Dafoe and Elizabeth Wright of the Lennox & Addington County area. Catherine was born about 1805.
Smedley & Catherine Benedict, along with all ten of their children, appear on the 1851 Canadian Census in Richmond Township, Lennox & Addington County, Upper Canada. At some point after 1851, Smedley & Catherine and their family moved westward, from Lennox & Addington County to Grey County, Ontario.
On August 16, 1856, the Ninth Line Union Phoenix Sabbath Sunday School was Organized, in the Cunningham Settlement of St. Vincent Twp. The Sunday School became noted for a huge picnic and garden party organized each summer.People came from far and near. Catherine, David and James Benedict, appear on the Record of attendance, of 1857, this shows us, that Smedley and Catherine and family are in St. Vincent Twp., at this time. But this David mentioned must be a second name, or mistake, on this list?
By 1861, Smedley & Catherine Benedict together with their youngest five children, appear in St. Vincent Township, Grey County, Ontario. Smedley and Catherine resided in St. Vincent Townhip, on a farm, until Smedley's death in 1867.
The Final Years for Smedley
Smedley Benedict died April 27,1867. He was the first burial, in Vanwyck's Cemetery, Balaclava, Silcote area, Lot 8, Con. C in Sydenham Township, Grey County, Ontario. His stone reads;
Smedley Benedict, Age 67 yrs, 1 mth.
Smedley's stone is the oldest in Cemetery and it had been broken in 3 pcs. over years, but was repaired by his g.grandson Roy Gifford, Sheriff of St. Vincent County, about 1960. The stone reads:
In Memory Of
Smedley Benedict
Died April 27, 1867
Aged 67 yrs. 1m.
Gone but not Forgotten
After Smedley's death in 1867, the 1881 census has Catherine living with her son Ard, it is likely Catherine went with her son James when he moved from Chesley to Woodstock in 1886 as Catherine dies in 1887 in Woodstock, Oxford co., Ontario.
She is buried in the Baptist Cemetery, Woodstock, Ontario. Her stone reads:
Catherine Dafoe, 1804-1887 Wife of S. C. Benedict
Catherine's stone also has written on it Andrew S. son of James & Sarah Benedict 1889-1889. Same Graveyard same Row 30 feet to the right sits James Benedict and Sarah Williamette's Monument. Andrew's birth record States, Andrew Smith Benedict

Caleb and Sarah appear with their seven children on the 1871 Census in Sullivan Township, Grey County, Ontario, Canada.
However it would appear that Caleb and his wife Sarah parted ways sometime in the ten years between the 1871 and 1881 censuses. This is confirmed in a letter written by a grandson of Caleb and Sarah, Jim McLeod, in which he writes that "Granddad and Grandmother separated when Bob(their son Robert) was 8 or 9 years old and went to Nebraska."
In 1880 Caleb Benedict can be found in Nebraska according to the USA Federal Census but, his wife Sarah was still living in Sullivan Twp. Grey County, Ontario Canada.
On the 1881 Canadian census a Sarah Benedict age 52, married, born Ireland is living in the home of Alexander and Janet Benton/Beaton in Sullivan Twp. Grey County. Further, on the 1901 Canadian Census, Sarah Benedict 78, widow, born Ireland, can be found living with her daughter Sarah Jane and son-in-law George Agnew in Grey County.
A death for a Mrs. Sarah Benedict on 21 Jun 1901 in Grey County has been found but the death registration gives no other pertinent information.
The descendants of the son Robert James Benedict have information that the wife of Caleb Benedict was a Sarah McMullen.
"NOTE":If Caleb's wife WAS Sarah McMullen she, also, was possibly the sister of Elias' wife Margery McMullen. The McMullen Family came from Smedley's, tramping grounds in Grey County. Possible through Elias, Caleb met Sarah McMullen, fell in love with the younger girl (middle age itch) maybe, and left his wife, moving to USA to save face from relatives. Elias and wife also decideing to go along with Caleb. Elias' wife Margery was 9 years younger than Elias, so even if her sister was the older, she would probably be, give or take, 15 years younger than Caleb's first wife Sarah. "JUST A THOUGHT"!
The Final Years for Caleb
It appears that Caleb and at least some of his family moved to the USA by 1880. The 1880 USA Federal Census indicates that Caleb and two of his sons, Robert and David, are living in Polk, Nebraska. Caleb had indicated he was a widower by this time, however this was not the case.
Polk, Nebraska is also where Caleb's brother Elias and his family can be found on the 1880 census.
Jim McLeod, Caleb's grandson, son of Caleb and Sarah's daughter Mary Ann/Marian indicated that his Grandfather died at his home in Lyner North Dakota in 1907. - Birth*: 1830, Richmond, Len & Add, On, Can

Indexed by Ancestry.com, Principal=Catherine Benedict - Occupation*: Tugboat Captain, Toronto, York, On, Can, For many years the name of Clark was prominent on Toronto Bay in the business of carrying freight to and from the Toronto Islands. It was back in 1890 that Tom (T. J.) Clark, in partnership with a brother, took delivery of a wooden screw ferry which was built at Toronto specifically for the Clark freight operations. Not surprisingly named CLARK BROS., this vessel (C. 94984) measured 80 x 16 x 5. 5 and was a single-deck steamer. Later sold to the Toronto Ferry Company, she was rebuilt as a double-deck passenger ferry and remained in service through the 1929 season.
Left: On a morning run in July 1958, the T. J. CLARK approaches Ward's Island dock.
The next Clark steamer appears to have been the ELSIE (C. 12207l), likewise a wooden single-deck screw freight boat. She was built at Trenton, Ontario, in 1906 and was named in honour of a daughter of Tom Clark. This vessel apparently carried passengers as well on occasion, but she did not linger on the Bay for many years. She was taken to Georgian Bay where she served as a tug.
Over the years the Clark family business prospered and in due course was incorporated as Clark Limited. In 1911 a composite twin-screw freight steamer was built by and for the firm at the Clark's dock property at the foot of Yonge Street. Given registry number C. 126838, she was christened T. J. CLARK, although throughout her life she was familiarly referred to by all and sundry simply as "the T. J." Measuring 69 feet in length, 20 feet in the beam and 6 feet in depth, her tonnage was shown as 75 Gross and 51 Net. As the term "composite" implies, her frames were of steel while the hull planking was wood. Her decks, bulwarks, pilothouse and boilerhouse were of steel.
T. J. CLARK's twin screws were driven by individual compound engines built by the Polson Iron Works, Toronto, but she was equipped with only one rudder. The engines were non-condensing and exhausted through one "puffer" mounted beside the stack. Thus when operating at full speed, the individual engines produced a loud and distinctive beat, but one that was only sometimes rhythmic due to the fact that the engines were not synchronized.
"T. J." was fitted with fire fighting equipment and she served, in addition to her regular duties, as harbour and island fireboat until 1923 when the Toronto Fire Department took delivery of its own vessel, the wooden pumper CITY OF TORONTO T. F. D., soon renamed CHARLES A. REED. Even in later years, long after the CLARK had ceased functioning as a fireboat, she still carried her pumping gear although all external equipment had been removed,
In the early years of her service, "T. J." had no passenger cabins at all and her looks could only he described as utilitarian. The foredeck was completely open and the after deck was covered only by a flimsy steel canopy. A small steel cabin situated aft on the starboard side looked for all the world like a rural outhouse and actually did service to the same purpose.
For many years Clark Limited and T. J. CLARK were managed by Tom Clark himself, but upon his death active management was carried on by his widow Margaret, Mrs. Clark was certainly not afraid of hard work and on occasion could be seen helping to clean out the "T. J.'s" boilers at fit-out time. She always stood out in a crowd by reason of her flaming red hair.
Two trips a day were made to the Islands, the freight consisting, to a large extent, of the personal effects of residents moving to or from their summer homes on the Islands. All manner of other goods were carried for delivery to island addresses by Toronto's two big department stores, Eatons and Simpsons, and in addition the CLARK took all the groceries, meat, bread, and dairy products for the account of island merchants. All the freight handled directly by Clark Limited was taken to the Manitou Road wharf located at the eastern end of Long Pond at Centre Island, but goods for many other accounts were landed either at Ward's Island dock or at Stevenson's Landing, a dock inside the lagoon at Hanlan's Point.
On the morning trip over to the Island, the delivery men, island merchants returning from market, and some of the crew usually indulged in a few hands of poker played on a packing case or any other flat object available. It is interesting to note that in those days vehicles travelling to the Island were not simply controlled as they are today. Up until the Second War, no motor or horse driven vehicles were permitted on the Island at all (except for garbage collection) and therefore all freight brought over on the CLARK had to be distributed on hand-drawn wagons and carts.
Mrs. Clark continued to operate the business until 1926. On April 3rd of that year, Clark Limited and T. J. CLARK passed to the management of R. G. Dibble, a Toronto coal dealer. This new management lasted only one year, however, as the Register indicates that T. J. CIARK was acquired by the Corporation of the City of Toronto on May 6, 1927. As in the case of all other Island ferries owned by the City, her operation was placed in the hands of the Toronto Transportation Commission. This body actually assumed full ownership in 1948.
In the spring of 1930, "T. J." was converted for passenger service to replace the worn-out veteran CLARK BROS. which was burned at the stake at Sunnyside Park later in the year. As a matter of fact, the reconstruction was done in the east slip of the Bay Street ferry docks while "T. J." lay alongside the older vessel. Many pieces of equipment were transferred to "T. J." from CLARK BROS. as the work progressed. T. J. was given an enclosed passenger cabin amidships but the stern remained open at the sides providing an "observation" deck fitted with canvas curtains which could be dropped to close in the area during damp weather or on cool spring and fall days. The reconstruction altered the CLARK's tonnage to 87 Gross and 59 Net.
T. J. CLARK kept the same name throughout her life but, although few people are aware of the fact, it was proposed to rename her TORONTO ISLANDER at the time of her conversion to passenger service. Her ringbuoys and other pieces of equipment were relettered with the new name, but no official change was ever made and the name did not appear on her hull. The rumour was that the re-registration charges were too steep, but perhaps the T. T. C. simply realized that the familiar old name would probably have stuck with her daily riders whether it was actually changed or not.
Despite the addition of the new after cabin, the CLARK entered service with a completely open foredeck. Passengers were quick to complain that the voluminous quantities of soot mixed with condensing steam from the exhaust puffer caused considerable inconvenience to anyone forced to ride up forward during the crowded rush hour periods. She was soon fitted with a canvas canopy in an effort to cut down on cleaning bills for passengers' soiled clothing, but the canvas was only temporary and proved to be most unsatisfactory. It was replaced by a permanent steel canopy into which were cut two holes, partly covered by a hood, in order that the skipper might be able to see the bow of the ship while docking, a view otherwise obstructed by the upward lift of the canopy near the forward end of its length.
As the years passed by, the speed of the "T. J." gradually decreased and in spite of the composite construction, her hull flattened out and showed evidence of sagging aft. In 1952 she reverted to her original role of a freight carrier although she retained her mid-ship cabin in modified form. Whether the heavy freight loads she was carrying once again disagreed with her, or whether the old girl objected to the practice of some crews of stopping her at the dock by throwing the rope onto the dock mooring post rather than by reversing the engines, she soon showed even more evidence of age. By the way, this docking technique played havoc with the docks as well as the ship and led to the partial collapse of the west pier of the old dock at Ward's Island and the complete destruction of the dock at Stevenson's Landing which fell into the lagoon as a result of the CLARK pulling on it.
The CLARK's certificate was finally withdrawn at the end of the 1959 season and she was offered for sale. She spent the summer of 1960 peacefully dozing in the sun in the west slip of the Bay Street docks but her condition was by then so bad that no takers came forward and, in order to dispose of her, she was sold in December 1960 for the magnificent sum of one dollar to the Toronto Drydock Company Ltd. She was soon taken to their yard at the extreme eastern end of the Keating Channel and was lifted out onto the dock. By the end of April 1961 she had been reduced to a pile of rubble on the pier.
The memory of "T. J." occupies a very special place in the minds of Islanders past and present and all those who saw her in the course of her daily duties around the harbour. As mentioned previously, her double exhaust sound was unique and it stands out in memory as her very own trademark. Perhaps it was most noticeable when she was turning on a springline around the end of the Manitou Road freight dock. The other "voice" of the "T. J." also is well remembered. She originally carried a very large brass whistle, the strident tone of which was most disturbing and unpleasant. After she was put into passenger service, she fell heir to the high melodious chime whistle which came from LUELLA when that steamer was retired in 1935. The whistle had served until 1929 on JOHN HANLAN.
Longtime Islanders will find that they cannot think about the CLARK without remembering her crews over the years. Up until the 1930's, she had very few captains. One of her earliest masters was the famous Captain Benedict. He was succeeded by the wiry Joe Grace who was descended from French Canadian and Canadian Indian stock. Joe was a past master when it came to handling and docking the "T. J." and he used her twin screws to great advantage. Strangely enough, he shunned her steering wheel, always preferring to use the joystick also mounted in the pilothouse.
Later on when she was in passenger service with shift crews in charge, several captains simply could not get the hang of the twin screw method of docking (steering with the engines) and sought other employment rather than trying to master the technique. Her last skipper was Capt. Eric Foote who was an expert at handling the little steamer. After her retirement, he went on to the larger ferries and stayed with the ferry service until 1972.
Memories are fine, but we would have liked to have seen the whole of the CLARK preserved. Unfortunately, this was not possible bearing in mind the old girl's condition, but it is gratifying to know that the "T. J. 's" Dake Steam Steering Gear has been preserved and is presently in storage at the Marine Museum of Upper Canada awaiting suitable display space. A little bit of T. J. CLARK will live on always in the hearts of all who knew this unprepossessing little steamer as she puffed her way across the bay each day. - Birth*: circa 1859, Wallaceburg, Chatham, On, Can

Smedley disappears from the records and his final location is unknown at this time. John’s mother was Catherine, from the Dafoe family who originally were from Switzerland and also became United Empire Loyalists after the American Revolutionary War. Her final resting place may be in Oxford County, Ontario, according to a headstone there.
John’s Early Years
John and Harriet
John Benedict traveled sometime to the southwest reaches of Ontario near Lake St. Clair. In 1858 he was a resident of the township of Dawn. In the adjacent township to the west, in Sombra, the Dustin family was farming. Caleb’s daughter Harriet met the young man from Sheffield and they married in Kent County on Mar 23, 1858.
