  • Relationship: 2nd cousin 5 times removed of Roger William Bredin.
  • Biography*: Canadian Born
Now that don't mean a thing to be born in Canada, I suppose its like being Born any Place, only to be born in the back woods of Canada does mean something it means you were 25 miles from a doctor, 25 miles from a Post office, or store. it means that you had know transportation Except - your 2 legs.
Also it was absolutly necessary. that your eyes were of the very best as all you had to guide you were a Place cut on a tree about Every Hundred yards. Also it was necessary that you always carried a gun. for you never could tell what minute you would be face to face with an Indian or a Bear or Panther or most any wild animal as the woods were full of Timber Wolf and all kinds of animals and snakes.
You will say why in the world did you live in such a God forsaken Place. Well with me there were no choice. Father came over from England and mother from Ireland. They met at Owen (?) Sound on the Georgian Bay and were married there.
Father emeditally took a contract with a man whose name was Roger Conger. I was named Roger after this man. (But was changed later) for reasons you will learn later, now this contract I spoke about. was to cut 600. acers of timber Pile it up and burn it. Make Potash and black salty out of the ashes. Well that ment move 25 miles into the forest. So father Put a gang of men to work and in a few years the country begin to settle up.
We made all our own clohes I can see mother yet as she used to work with the old spinny wheel. I remember when I was a boy. Oh I was quite a Case I had begin to look sidewise at the girls tete Well mother made me a new suit out of what we called fullcoth. Now realy that material was lfi inch think and as stiff as a branch. In our way it was real handy, for I could just slip out of it when I went to bed. and it would stand by my bed all night all I had to do was just sep right in and I was dressed.
Now folks that suit was just what changed my Entire life, you see my life in the woods was not just to my liking. I had other ambitions Father would bring home books from town and I used to read most of the time, for I didnt just like snow 4 foot deep and 4 (degrees) below zero. so I was content to read, now most of my stories was about the states, and one esspecialy about Newbraska that was what Every body called Nebraska at that time in Canada, Well Father had a sister living there and he said if I would wait untill I was through High school he would let me go there for a visit. Now I dont want you to get me wrong about this High school, I dont want to try and leave the Impression on you that I am a high ly Educated fellow. for I am not; of course you would ketch on to that by reading this story as I Know I might have some misspelled words or to (But dont mean to)
You see when we first moved in this wild country and some fur years after. There were other men moved in and some with large familys like ours so they build a school House down in the flat where we first started school, it was close to the forest and the mosquitos were so bad we just couldnt learn a thing. so the school board called a meeting and decided to build another school House so they built it on a big hill, so that was always called high school. I think they taught up to the forth and 5 grade so you see that is where I was when I left High School and started for Newbraska
Now when I landed in a small Nebraska town and was taken to my uncles PLace and usherd in to a big house and about 15 or 16 cousins and there best fellows from town all citybred. You can just amagine what a side show I was for that bunch. Me with my fullclothes chlose on stiff as a board, and me as green as they make them, in that wild country.
I suppose you will think I dint Know Enough to realze I was the whole show but I did. So I visited my uncle and aunt two days and said good bye.
Now I wasnt very long in getting read of them clothes I stoped at the Hotel and in the morning made the change I just left them standing up by my bed I would like to have Seen the chamber maid when she went in to clean the room but I was gone, I finely got a job as clerk in a country store I worked in the day time and studied at night You see I didnt think that High school grade I got in Canada, sufficent, for an up to date clerk.
Well I got along Pretty well for a couple of years, when a real slick traveling man came in the store one day, and he said I was very foolish, Well I found out afterwords that I was, but not they way he ment it.
Why he sayes a young man with your Personality and Education, I wonerd then if he Knew about the High School Education I had, Why he sayes you have the makings of a first clas salesman. Your Exceptionly good looking. and will be sure to take well with the ladies. Well when he said ladies that convinced me, I was sold. Now he sayes we have an opening at Present in our Imboerdia dep., The salesman was taken sick so I can give you the Position it is 50.00 a week and Expenses. So I Excepted his Proposition and started at once well that was a long in 1913 and Every thning was going OK when the war started.
Pretty soon I got a letter from the bosse complaining that I wasnt getting Enough Buisness so I just wrote to him and told him conditions were in my territory I just told him the ladies here were wearing there dresses up to there knees and that they had no more use for Embrordia and that was the reason for slow sales.
Well the old Boss was sore he wrote me a long letter and wanted me to find out if the ladies in my territory were wearing lace or Embrordia Now I thought that was going just a little bit to far he Knew just as well as I did that I was a single man. Now how in the world could I know, so I just up and resigned. Aint that what you would have done.
    Prospectors Luck
Well Joe, I hear you made a great strike up on your claim.
Yeah just unearthed a ten lb nugget. I figure I have the greatest and richest claim on Earth. Went to sell from a miner at one of the card tables. as he troped his cards and knocked his chair over getting up. tell me about this claim of yours and how long have you been working it. Joes face got rather red and he become a little nervious. Oh about 18 months I gives. Well Well sayes the miner, great luck. had the claim ever been worked before, no no sayes Joe. I suppose you would not consider taking in a Partner. No not at all Well I have been diging all my life and never even struck a lead. Could I see this claim of yours it might give me an Idea of what formation to look for
Listening in on one man in a Million
Now most people call Him Kurmel. I don't know how he gost that Kernel hung on him. of course he was in the army during the World War. I heard him tell a fellow that he was where the bullets were the thickest. and thad buddy of his says oh yeh, I Remember. Now, you were under the amunation truck, Well any way they call him Kurnel, all but his wife she calls him Honey. She Probely gets the Honey Part form Kissing him right square on the mouth. They learned that from going to the movies. because I have known the Kurnel a long time and he never used to do that. Maybe he learned it when he was over in France you know the little French girls are what you would say up to date.
Now during these Depression times I have so much time to set around and observe this and that. Now I dont want you to think I listen in on Purpose. Not me. but still you know when any thing very funny is being said you just got to listen. Thats why I call him our man in a Million. Now to start with this is the greatest family man that ever was born, he has a wife and three nice children that he would actuly do there Breathing for them if it were possible, now to show you what I mean. he lives out about 7 miles from the city on a side street where there is not over 2 cars an Hour. and can you belive that not one of those kids has dare run across the street alone yet. If Jr. is playing ball and it goes across he has to get one of the other boys to get it.
Now my reason for telling you this is so you will not call me liar later on. when I tell you what happens when I am trying not to here but cant help it. I heard his wife one night say Honey I am going down town tomorrow with my dad now that was a Plenty for he will not let his wife or children ride with any
    A short short story
speaking of dreams reminds me of a little comedy, at least it turned out to be caused by a drunk in our home town.
There lived a young man. His name was Ted Melton. We all called him Ted, he always was the life of the Party where ever he went. in fact nothing was complete with out Ted. he had been keeping company with Alice for about two years. and of course we all took it as a sure thing that they would soon get married.
Well all at once we noticed that something was wrong Ted was gloomy didnt go any Place. But Alice seemed to have more Pep than ever, would go to dances and Parties with first one than another. Untill finely it was anounced in the Paper that she would marry Herb. The cashier in the first National Bank.
Now Ted took this blow right on the tip of the chin like a man and just laughed. But to cap the climax. Ted got a written invitation from Alice to attend the Wedding. so after he got threw kicking the dog under the table and the cat down the stairs he decided to attend. So forthwith he Proceded to drop Alice a note of accepptance
Now comes the ordeal that was the worse blow of all - was the toast. As they raised there glasses. Alice reached across the table and toched glasses with Ted. At the same time giving the following toast. Here is to my discarded lover. Every body apluded. but Porr Ted. his face was like an over ripe strawberry
Now the next thing to satisfy the company was a respond from Ted Every body held there breath wating. wating. When finley Ted raised to his full height of 6 ft, and with glass in hand. Says ladies and gentlemen. Bride and Groom. I can only describe this situation by referring to a dream while I was out in my motor Boat the other afternoon The water was very calm not even a ripple I shut of the Engine and let it drift on the still water. While I laid back on the cusion. and was soon fast asleep drifting along. but while I drifted out into the lake I had the strangest dream of my life. Just above me flying around and around. was a flock of the Prettest Pigeons I had ever seen. Slowly they flew around just above my head I watched them ever so long finly my attention was called to one Particular Bird. its Plumage seamed brighter than the rest and I thought Oh if I only had you for mine and still it seamed to know what I was thinking for it kept droping lower then the rest sometimes it would Pass right over my head. So right there I decided to have this Beautiful bird so I kept Perfectly still untill it came within arms tenth of me and in my dream I made one desperate grab. (and that woke me up)
Then from the Groom. Well did you suceed in getting the bird.
Noooooo all I got was the toes the other fellow got the bird.
Thuming a Ride Brings Romance Tragedy & fortune
It was Round up time on the Big Ranch of Kournal Cuthbert. Every body was hussy with the calfing Roundup.
The boys were all in there saddles even the cook was called out at times to fill in for the Kurnal was short of help.
Lucy Cuthbert the Kournels daughter and Pet was the Pride of the ranch. there was not one of the boys that would not protect hur with his life.
it was on the morning of June the 3rd that the Cournel sent Lucy to Butte for supplies. she had the big Packard sedan filled with gas and started on her way. it was a wonderful morning. the sun was shining the flowers all in bloom. She would through back her head. and inhale the wonderful Perfume as she drove along at a medium speed. never dreaming what was going to happen to change her whole life in 24 hours.
Now Ted Harrington and his father had some misunderstanding which resulted in Ted leaving home and told to cut out the night clubs. and be a man. So being short of cash he decided to thum his way to Bute Montana. he was a very hansome fellow with square sholders, wonderfull form & Personality Blue Eyes and medium dark hair tipping the scales at 180 lbs. 23 years of age. so he had no trouble in thuming a ride with any one. going his way. but he had never travled.
He had always been a clerk in his fathers store from the time he had graduated untill this strange or unlucky day in June. he asked to be let down in the suburbs at Butte as he wished to wash up. and brush the alklie from his clothes and hair. before going on main street. Now Ted had just aligted from the car. and as the driver waved his had at him. as he Passed around the corner from light Ted stood there wiping the alklie dust from his Eyes when he was atracted by a big car driving up to the curb and two Police men got out with there Pistols drawn and Ted heard the words very discreetly Hands up.
he was taken to the Police station between these two big Burly Police officers searched and finger Prints taken and questioned. one of the Police men told the Judge that they finly had landed the notorous bank robber at last. with out question. Porr Ted could say nothing If he started to ask why he was arrested he was told to shut up. The judge ordered the Police to lock him up as there were a mob gathering out side the Jail. And old judge lynch was quite Popular in Montana at that time.
Now Tobe Williams has just loaded the last bundle of groceries in Lucys big sedan and stood kidding her on how sweet she looked on this beautiful June morning. Her cheeks were like ripe cherries. as she reached over and tickled old Tobe under the chin. She was full of life this June morning life was good to her as she sit there Kidding Poor old Tobe.
but Tobe did not seem to notice her he was watching down the street at a crowd of men that had gathered in front of the Jale. Lucy noticing his gase and excoted look asked him. why what is the matter Tobe. I'11 Just bet that good Looking bank robber has got away. why they were going to lynch him last night.
Not being interested in Bank Robbers. Lucy decided she had better be going as it was a long ways to the ranch and she wished to get home before dark. she Poked old Toby under the chin again. and threw the clutch and the big sedan begin to move slowly down the street. As she moved along at a medium speed and the houses were getting fewer and finly the last one was Past then nothing but the open Plains, with now and then a creek. with a Poor bridge to across.
Now that she was out on the open Prairie alone and night coming on she begin to step Harder on the gas untill the big sedan was moving around 45 or 50 all at once she becomes nervous she started to have a feeling that something was going to happen But what was it. what Tobe said about the Bank Robber oh well I guess its just nervs. So she increased the speed untill she was up to 60 62 65 to fast for these roads and a Bad curve ahead so she took her foot of the aceetor as she made the curve at 50. When all at once a man appeared in the road not a Hundred yds ahead of the car she noticed at first sight that he was young and very good looking also that he was facing the road with his thum pointing west the same direction she going. she had read about People in the East even only to ride a few blocks would thum a ride but out here in Western Montana it was not Practical.
Well what to do she didnt know she knew her father would be furious and Dave there ranch forman who seamed to think he had a claim on her would both storm. Well let them storm. I am going to give this Poor fellow a lift. so without another thought she applied the breaks. and the car came to a full stop.
Excuse me Madam for stoping you But it is very esenesal for my good health that I get away from here Pronto. you see the Police are after me.
Oh so you are the Bank Robber are you
no no Miss. but I am ackused and no way to Prove my innocence. Wont you believe me Please.
Lucy kept looking side ways at him when ever she could take her eyes of the road for a second. What a Wonderful man she thought to bad that he was a Notorious bank Robber murder. for the cashier had been Killed. and no doubt there was a large Reward for his capture. But he said he was Innocent. Just ahead there was a raise in the road and lights from a car came in sight
Oh he said Police they will arrest me sure.
Jump for Heavens sake jump back of this seat and cover up with my coat they may stop me and question me but I dont think they will search the car.
Ted had just time to Pile in amoungst the groceres and Pull Lucys coat over him. when a big Police car drove up and motioned Lucy to stop her car. as the car stopped and the Police got out Lucy reconzed Captain Stafelton on sight he took of his cap and advanced to greet Lucy now Lucy thought what had I better do tell Cap Stafelton that his robber is in my car and let them take him and Perhaps harm him. No No I cant do that. he may be Innocent. and he sayes he is I will just tell Cap Stafelton I have seen no one. so as Cap Stafelton advanced to the car holding out his hand.
With how do you do. Miss Lucy. We are looking for a bank robber & murder that got away last night he is a very Power full fellow he knocked out two of our best men while they were taking him to the Jail and got clear away. You didnt happen to see any one out this way. I Persume he must be on foot as he had no horse.
Now Now Captain Stafelton I have seen no one. And I fear I must be getting along as father will be anxious good bye Captain Wish you luck. and Lucy threw in the clutch and was soon up to 60 and going strong.
Now Ted was beginning to get uneasy in his crampt Position amoungst the groceries. but Lucy would not allow him to get in the front seat untill they had crossed the creek. altho the bridge was in Poor repair.
so as Lucy was driving very slow while approaching the bridge a man steped out from the shadow of the bridge and in his right hand held a big Revolver and it was pointed straight at Lucys Head and he spoke but one word Stop.
Lucy stoped the car at once. As she did she was looking in the mussel of a big 6 gun.
dont be afraid lady. as long as you do as I say you will not be harmed in the least. But this is surly good luck for me for I have been walking and my feet are sore and I Just have to get out of Montana at once so If you will Please move over I will take the wheel.
Now Lucy Kept thinking of Ted. and she was afraid he might jump up and this fellow would shoot him, she Kept thinking to her self how she would hate to have anything happen to him. I dont care if he is a Bank Robber I like him. Oh if I could only get that gun away from him how can I manage.
The man at the wheel seamed to be an Expert driver for he threw in the clutch and the big sedan moved of as smooth as If Lucy was at the wheel after driving a few miles he spoke to Lucy and says if you will be a good little girl I'11 Just Put this gun in the side Pocket its in my way driving.
Now to Ted who lay back there listening that was the real chance he had been waiting for. so he waited untill they came to a rough streach of road so he could not be heard when he got out from under the groceries at last the chance came as they were crossing a bridge where the creek was swolen he had to drive very slow as they got across the bridge and before he had time to throw the car in high Ted raised up from behind the driver and throwed both arms around him. At the same time he told Lucy to grab the wheel and Keep the car in the road. untill she could get a chance to apply the brakes and stop the car.
The Robber was a very Powerfull fellow and it took all the strength Ted had to hold him. but at last his chance came. and a well directed blow on the jaw soon settled matters.
Ted & Lucy than untied some of the bundles and got Enough cord to tie his hands & feet he was then Put in Teds Hiding Place. in the rear of the front seat while Lucy & Ted continued on there way to the Cuthbert Ranch.
Kurnal Cuthbert sit on the front Porch smoking a big cigar after dinner But he could not Keep the cigar going there were a dozen matches threwed around his chair and Frequently he would get up and Walk back and fourth up and down the long Porch but his Eyes were always on the winding drive way that leads to the big Ranch house. Some times he would turn to Dave his Forman. and say Dave this is way unusial for Lucy. to be late. she should have been here 3 hours ago. theres something wrong. Lucy was his only child. and the apple of his Eye. Dave was also in love with Lucy but in a different way.
The Kurnal walked up and down the Porch a few more times. When he finly turned to Dave. and sayes Dave I cant stand this any longer. get the boys out order them to saddle up at once bring my horse up here While I get my gun. be ready in 10 minutes. as the boys all rode up to the Ranch House leading the Kurnals horse. guns hanged from there belts as the Kurnal steped out his big guns hanging from his belt. Every thing was as still as death.
As the Kurnal steped down from the Porch and took the reins from his Foreman. and was in the act of mounting his favorite horse. when Honk Honk came the familiar sound from the big sedan it sounded so loud on this still night. and all the boys threw there hats in the air and began a race for the big car as it came slowly up the drive.
Lucy drove directly up to the Ranch house. where her father and the foreman were standing. Jumping from the car she threw her arms around her fathers neck Pulling him down and Kissing him half a dozen times. saying Oh Dad. I am so happy and I have had such an exciting time all in side of 24 hours I have been Kidnapped. my car taken from me. and Probably would have been murderd. only for Ted. Oh excuse me Mr. Harrington I mean. We have had so much Excitement that I Just call him Ted now it seams that I have known him for years. But come I must Introduce you to Mr. Harrington right away.
As Ted stepped form the big sedan and straightened up to his full size 6 ft and square sholder. he could not help but be admired. by all But Dave. he seamed to shrink. and his drooping sholders seamed to drop still lower which matched very well with his Bow legs.
After the Introductions was over. The Kurnal turned to his foreman and told him to call Sam the coulard cook to take in the groceries. Now as Every one was busy talking they never Noticed Sam going after the groceries. When all at once Sam came running up to the Porch. The whites of his Eyes shining and a yelling at the top of his voyce Mr. Kurnal Mr. Kurnal. You all come right down hea. These here groceries is alive come quick. come quick.
Lucy jumped from her fathers lap where she had been setting. Oh dad I forgot to tell you. we have the murder under the groceries tied up you and Ted bring him in while I Phone to Cap Stafelton. I feel sure that he is the man thats wanted for the Bank Robbery & murder.
Lucy stepped to the Phone and called Police Headquarters at Butte.
    Captain Stafelton speaking.
Well Caption this is Lucy Cuthbert speaking. You know last night you stoped my car and asked if I had seen the Bank Robber. Well I hadn't. but I did see a nice young man thumming a ride and I had him in the back of the car covered up with groceries when you stoped me. So now you can come out and get your Robber at once.
Ha Ha. came over the wire from Cap Stafelton. I thot last night when I taled to you that you was very anxious to get home and away from us. and also how your Eyes danced with Excitement and the Blush on you face would not rub of. so I decided not to search your car. for I figured it was just another case where the young lady falls in love with the Robber. so I Placed a man to watch the Ranch that no strangers leave. am leaving now for the Ranch. Ill be seeing you and hung up.
When the Kurnal and Dave brought the Prisoner in and untied him they Placed him in a big arm chair and Dave got a rope and tied him in so that his feet and hands were free.
Then Sam was called to get him something to Eat. Poor Sam did not want to go near him he was still scared stiff. The Prisoner sat in the big chair but he never took his Eyes off Ted and Lucy. Finly Dave came in from the Bunk house and told the Kurnal there was a car coming up the drive. it stoped in front of the ranch house and three Policmen got out Cap Stafelton in the lead as they came up on the Porch. Kurnal Cuthbert opened the door and invited all to be seated. Ted and Lucy were in the library looking at some of the Kurals. hearing voices in the living room they came walking in. as they started to be seated. one of the big Policemen jumped from his chair shoved a big six gun in Teds stomick with the words hands up. turning to Cap Stafelton he said heres you man this is the fellow that beat up me and Obrin last nighty hes a dangerous man
Lucy was the first one to get Excited she jumped from her chair calling to the Kural to make that big Hunk of Boloney Put that gun away. Cap Stafelton steped up and took the gun and ordered him and Obrin to go out side and sit on the Porch. untill needed.
After everything was Explained and the Prisoner searched they got his Keys from his Pocket and unlocked his heavy suit case. and there in the botom was the Banks money tied up in Packages of 10,000 Each 40,000 in all after Cap Stafeltonn had questioned the Prisoner he finly confessed that he was the notorious Bud Roberts wanted in about Every state from the Mexico line. north to the Canadian border. with 50,000 Reward, dead or alive. after the confession was over Cap Stafelton turned to the Kurnal and asked him where Lucy was.
The Kurnal says I dont Just Know but I Persume she is with Ted was there any thing Particular. Oh no Kurnal I Just wanted to congratulate her you Know she Put a good one over on me today and earned a big reward besides. Well Ill see her some time soon and congratulate her for this. and if I am any judge of small matters, there will be something Else to congratulate her on.
Next morning Lucy ordered Monte her favorite house saddled and broght to the Post. also Nick, the Bay gelding for Ted. and after Packing a nice basket of lunch they started out to explore the ranch. it was one of those beautiful June mornings when Everything was full of life. They rode over the hills Enjoying Every minute of Each others company When they finly came to a nice cool shady spot with a clear spring of cool water where they drank and watered there horses. When Lucy decided that she was getting hungry so they spred there Blanket on the ground and was soon munching fried chicken and what not. Ted lay on his back after lunch smoking a cigartte and looking at the Blue sky. Thinking, Lucy he sayes this all seams like a dream. a Beautiful dream. Ted Lucy sayes what are you going to do with your reward money. My Lucy thats not mine. that is all yours. Every cent. No No Ted you were the one that captured him. and so they laughed and Enjoyed them selves. as only those that are young and full of life can. But at last, they must return to the ranch.
The lights were just turned on at the Ranch as Ted and Lucy rode up. Kural Cuthbert was setting in his useal Place on the Porch smoking his cigar when they dismounted and walked hand in hand up the walk that Had a Roe of Flowers on Each side. The Kurnal watching them with a keen Eye. thought my God what a wonderful Pair of children. boath as straight as an arrow and with flushed faces they certainly look life itself.
They walked slowly towars him and Halted at the Bottom of the Porch boath looking the Kurnal straight in the Eye with out a quiver. Than Lucy Pulled her hand from Teds. and one leap was on her fathers lap. with boath arms around his neck as she lay in his arms He noticed her sobing he lifted her head and seen that her Eyes were wet. Oh Dad dont you want an Extra foreman I cant let Ted go I am so Happy No child I dont need another foreman. But what I have always wanted was a son. And I think your Ted will fit the bill. Oh Dad. • Relationship: 2nd cousin 5 times removed of Roger William Bredin.
  • Biography*: On the 1911 census, at the age of 50 years we find him listed as Kale with a "K". He is at this time, boarding with a 77 year old widow and her two daughters who only Migrated to Canada in 1891. Did Kale know the Husband before he died and felt sorry for the family? Or did he maybe admire one of the daughters? Or just casually boarding with them. There seems to be no mention, that I know of, that Caleb ever went to Polk, Nebraska with his father and two brothers. This Elizabeth Heldon, that he boarded with, She might be a clue. If Caleb's mother was Irish like the 1881 census states and born 1829, this Elizabeth might be a younger sister born 1834. She might have migrated in 1891 to be with her sister, maybe Sarah was sick or dying at the time? Maybe Kale paid Elizabeth's passage?? The 1911 Census has Kale working for Krug Bros. Furniture Co., 50 weeks per year , 60 hours per day at 15 cents an hour and it states that he made $450 in 1910. So he does not look like a traveller, to me.
The address where he is boarding is High Street West, Chesley. Ard Benedict also lived on High Street West, Chesley
